Lately around the Cove…

We’ve been thinking about how at Camp Crescent Cove, campers don’t just spend less time on screens, they spend zero time on them.

No phones tucked away.

No “just for music.”

No watches that buzz.

No tablets for downtime.

And while that can sound bold at first, what happens next is something we see every single summer and it’s pretty remarkable.

When screens disappear, something else shows up.

They Look Up

Without devices in their hands, campers begin to notice the world around them. They look up at each other during meals. They make eye contact. They notice who’s laughing, who’s quiet, and who might need a friend to sit beside them.

Conversation becomes natural again. It’s not forced or scheduled, just easy.

They Find Their Own Rhythm

There’s a pause…usually early on…when campers don’t quite know what to do with their hands. And then… they figure it out.

They make up games.

They sit together and talk.

They head into a cabin and end up laughing on someone else’s bunk.

Unstructured moments turn into creativity, connection, and imagination. This is the exact kind that doesn’t always have space to grow anymore.

When screens disappear, connection takes their place.

They Live Fully in the Moment

Without screens pulling them elsewhere, campers are fully here. At the lake. On the field. In the cabin. Around the campfire.

They aren’t thinking about capturing the moment because they’re busy being in it.

Instead of having to find these documented moments, they are able to visualize and feel these moments forever.

Friendships Form Faster

When there’s no device to retreat to, campers lean into each other. They talk things out. They sit side by side. They learn how to be together, even when it feels a little awkward at first.

That’s why camp friendships feel so real, so fast. They’re built on shared experiences, not shared screens.

They Learn Who They Are Without the Noise

Being completely screen-free gives campers a rare chance to hear themselves think. To notice what they enjoy. To try things without comparing, posting, or checking in with the outside world.

Confidence grows quietly. It’s not because someone liked a photo, but because they tried something new, made a friend, or handled a moment on their own.

And When They Go Home…

Campers don’t rush to get their phones back. They leave with inside jokes, stronger friendships, new routines, and a sense of independence that’s hard to miss.

Parents often tell us the same thing:

“Something shifted.”

That shift comes from being fully present. This is the result of a summer lived without distractions.
